D-60 Is Kimber's Pure Silver 75-Ohm Digital Cable
Kimber Kable's D-60 is, in Kimber's words, a "precision 75Ω pure silver digital tri-axial" cable for S/PDIF. It sits in Kimber's Summit Series. The center conductor is silver, the dielectric is air-articulated fluorocarbon, and two helically wound shields surround it.
A Pure Silver Conductor in Air-Articulated Fluorocarbon
Kimber lists the conductor type as silver and the dielectric as a low-loss, air-articulated fluorocarbon. Air stores less of the signal's energy than a solid plastic, and the fluorocarbon tape holds the conductor centered. Kimber's slogan for its digital line is "Push Every Bit."
Kimber publishes the electrical figures. The D-60 measures 55.2 picofarads of parallel capacitance, 0.502 microhenries of series inductance and 0.115 ohms of DC resistance per meter. Few cable makers print those numbers for a digital cable.
Two Helical Shields and a Nitrogen-Assisted Solder Joint
Two helically wound shields wrap the conductor, one over the other. Each end is hand soldered with nitrogen assistance, a termination method Kimber lists as a feature. Audio Advisor's listings carry the cable's older "Data Flex Studio" name, while Kimber now calls it simply D60.
The BNC and RCA Plugs, Explained
This D-60 ends in a BNC plug on one end and an RCA plug on the other, for gear that mixes the two sockets. BNC is the bayonet plug that twists a quarter turn and locks, found on some DACs, transports and studio gear. Kimber lists both as connector options for the D-60.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Doug Schneider reviewed the D-60 for SoundStage! in November 1996. "This is the best digital interconnect I have ever used in my system," he wrote, hearing "an amazing increase in low-level detail, air, and sense of space."
"The soundstage seemed much larger, the highs cleaner, and the imaging more focused," he added, calling it "a true reference-quality product with performance that makes it worth the asking price to those who can afford it."
Who Is This Digital Cable Best For?
- Your transport has BNC and your DAC has RCA — one cable covers both sockets, so no adapter sits in the digital path
- You want a silver conductor in a 75-ohm line — Kimber builds the D-60 as a precision 75-ohm pure silver cable, so the signal path is silver from plug to plug
- You are feeding a reference DAC — SoundStage! called it a true reference-quality product, so it belongs at the top of a front end
- You want the numbers — Kimber publishes capacitance, inductance and resistance per meter, so you can compare it on paper as well as by ear
- Both your components use the same socket — a mixed BNC-to-RCA cable is only for gear that differs. Choose the Kimber D-60 RCA to RCA instead, or call us and we will match the plug
How Does It Connect to Your System?
Put the RCA end on the component with the RCA socket and the BNC end on the one with the BNC socket, then twist the BNC collar until it locks. Choose that digital input on the DAC.
Then listen. Other and longer lengths available. Call for prices.
Pairs Well With
A digital cable is one link in a digital chain. It usually joins these categories.
- Digital-to-Analog Converters — the receiving end of the link
- CD Players and Transports — the classic coaxial source
- Music Streamers — a streamer with a digital output
- Power Cables — clean power at both ends
Frequently Asked Questions
What does tri-axial mean?
Kimber's word for the build. A center conductor sits inside two helically wound shields, one over the other, so there are three concentric layers instead of the two in an ordinary coaxial cable.
Which RCA plug is on the cable?
Kimber lists an Ultraplate D-60 RCA as standard, with WBT 0102Ag and 0110Ag as options and a BNC alternative. Our listing names the plug type only, so call us if you need the exact model.
What is nitrogen-assisted soldering?
Kimber's termination practice, listed as a feature of the D-60. The joint is hand soldered under a flow of nitrogen. Kimber does not publish more detail, so we do not claim what the gas does.
What is S/PDIF?
The Sony/Philips Digital Interface, the standard behind the coaxial and optical digital sockets on consumer audio gear. Over coax it runs on a 75-ohm line with RCA or BNC plugs and carries stereo PCM and encoded surround.
Is there a step up?
Kimber AGDL Silver Digital is the next rung in Kimber's silver digital cables, with RCA plugs. Ask us about a BNC end.
