One Switch Turns a Transport Into a Ripper

There is a toggle on the back of the CR60. Set one way, it is a CD transport feeding your converter. Set the other, it copies the disc onto a USB drive. Nothing else needs to change.

Ripping happens with no computer anywhere in the picture: plug a drive into the back, load a disc, and the CR60 writes the tracks out as WAV files. Shanling's Eddict Player app adds FLAC when you would rather recover the storage space.

Underneath is a Philips drive with a Sanyo HD850 laser, reading CD, CD-R and CD-RW. The case is 200 by 180 by 50mm and weighs about 1.7kg, so it disappears onto a shelf.

Three Outputs and a USB-C Socket

As a transport it offers USB, coaxial S/PDIF and optical TOSLINK. The USB output is the useful one, because it plugs straight into the USB converters that most people already own.

Power comes over USB-C or from a 12-volt DC supply, which means the CR60 will run from a laptop charger or from a battery pack. Very few disc transports offer that kind of flexibility.

A 1.14-inch screen carries the track and status information, and there is nothing else to learn. Insert a disc, choose a mode on the rear switch, and the CR60 gets on with the one job it was built for.

Who Is This Transport Best For?

  • You want the collection archived — ripping to WAV on a USB drive with no computer means the job can happen next to the stereo rather than never happening at all.
  • Your converter is a USB DAC — a USB digital output connects to it directly, which is unusual on a disc transport and saves buying a converter box in between.
  • You want both jobs from one box — a rear switch moves between transport and ripper, so the CR60 keeps earning its shelf space once the ripping is done.
  • Space and power are limited — 200 by 180 by 50mm and 1.7kg, running from USB-C or 12V DC, suits a desk or a small system.
  • You still buy discs — new purchases join the digital library the same evening. Browse our digital-to-analog converters for the other half.

How Does It Connect to Your System?

In transport mode, run USB, coaxial or optical to your converter, and it feeds the amplifier as before. Set the rear switch to transport and load a disc.

To rip, flip the switch and connect a USB drive instead. Power comes over USB-C or 12V DC, and the Eddict Player app handles FLAC output and settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ripping need a computer?

Only a USB drive. Connect it to the back, load a disc, and the CR60 writes the files itself.

Which formats does it rip to?

WAV by default, with FLAC available through Shanling's Eddict Player app if you would rather save the space.

What outputs does it have?

USB, coaxial S/PDIF and optical TOSLINK, so it will meet almost any converter you point it at.

Which discs will it read?

CD, CD-R and CD-RW, through a Philips drive with a Sanyo HD850 laser.

How is it powered?

Over USB-C or from a 12-volt DC supply, which means a laptop charger or a battery pack will run it.
